The big boys are coming to Green Bay to do battle in the IFC’s 30 foot steel cage on January 8 at the Oneida Casino. The IFC today announced that Ohio’s Tony Sylvester will meet Travis “Diesel” Wiuff in a World Heavyweight Championship mixed martial arts five round contest.
Wiuff is the current IFC World Heavyweight Champion (235-265lbs) Champion, a title he won against Oklahoma’s Tracy Willis in August. At that time the title was vacant due to the untimely death of Heavyweight Champion Wiuff’s former training partner, Justin Eilers, Wiuff doesn’t care who he has to fight to keep the heavyweight belt in the “family”. “Justin was my friend and buddy,” says Wiuff. “He helped push me into MMA and I intend to honor his memory by destroying any fighter who wants his belt.” Wiuff has met the world’s best in the UFC, IFC and PRIDE and stands ready to defend the title for Eilers. Eilers was shot and killed on Christmas Day in 2008. Wiuff is 6’3” and is expected to weigh in at around 240lbs while Sylvester stands 6’ 2” and will also weigh in at around 240lbs.
This World Championship will be part of a ten fight card. In keeping with a IFC tradition, the event will feature a four man single elimination tournament. That tournament will be in the welterweight division and will feature four top contenders in Bill Hill, Craig Kaufman, Dan Stittgen and Trevor Garrett. A women's bout is expected to be announced shortly. Among the stars expected to be on hand for the event is the UFC’s Rich Franklin. Former and current IFC Champions include Chuck Liddell, Eugene Jackson, Rich Franklin, Tim Silva, Jens Pulver, Dan Severn, Igor Vovchanchin, Matt Lindland, Paul Buentello, Jeremy Horn and many other top fighters in MMA. IFC fighters come from many backgrounds; they are respected as some of the best athletes in the world. Most use a combination of boxing, wrestling, open hand combat and martial arts fighting techniques in the cage. Fights can be won by knockout, submission or by the scorecard. There are three five-minute rounds in a non-championship bout and five five-minute rounds in a championship bout. Known for their extreme, no holds barred fighting in the steel cage IFC fighters will do just about anything necessary to win.
