It's not every day that you win a gold medal at the World Eskimo Indian Olympics but Avery Vilche accomplished just that. She is the 2008 Gold Medalist in the Ear Weight (don't ask, but think of about 16 pounds of lead hanging from your ear). She also has two silver medals in the Eskimo Stick Pull and the Four Man Carry. This alone makes Avery a pretty unique athlete but when you add that she is a Golden Gloves Champion, an former Kickboxing Champion and a collegiate wrestler at Chico State (against men) you realize that she is a little more than just unique. She is extraordinary.
Now she enters the steel cage. As Avery tells it, "I got so excited every time I watched a MMA fight. I felt like I could do this- it's REAL fighting- a combination of boxing (my first love), kickboxing, wrestling and submissions. I always wanted to choke someone out- here was my chance! “Avery’s chance to try out her choke holds will come when she enters the IFC steel cage against Melissa Moore on Saturday March 27 at Gold Country Casino in Oroville.
What this attractive athlete is really fighting for is to raise of Alaskan native culture and games. She is working on a documentary about the female athletes that compete in the Eskimo Olympics and the culture surrounding it.You can read up on Avery and follow her blog at eskimowarrior.blogspot.com.
