MIKE WHITEHEAD TO MEET JEFF MONSON ON JULY 10 |

When Mike Whitehead and Jeff Monson face each other in the main event at the IFC Extreme Challenge on July 10 at Soaring Eagle there will be many similarities to sift through. |
|
Both have garnered worldwide recognition and rankings as mixed martial art heavyweights.
Both carry impressive records into the cage – Whitehead at 24-7, Monson at 33-11.
Both use submission skills to defeat their opponents. |

Both have fought at the highest levels against the stiffest of competition. Whitehead’s resume includes wins over Kevin Randleman, Ben Rothwell, Vernon White, Krzysztof Soszynski and Mark Kerr. Monson has beaten Sergei Kharitonov, Ricco Rodriguez, Roy Nelson, Kazuyuki Fujita and Marcio Cruz. The differences are many, too. Whitehead has honed his skills under Pat Miletich and out in Las Vegas with Randy Couture.

Monson has spent the bulk of his career with American Top Team. Whitehead is known as a gym warrior who will outwork anyone and translate that into victories in the cage where he is 15-2 in his last 17 fights. |

Monson often overpowers opponents and uses his ground quickness to keep the fight where he wants it. This has brought him eight victories in his last 11 fights. In the end, it is a matchup of two highly respected, highly decorated MMA heavyweights. |

“This will be a fight where each guy will try to dictate where it ends up … and, in the end, they both want it to go to the same place,” matchmaker Monte Cox said. “I think this is a very high-level fight and a great main event.” |

This fight will be one of the many exciting fights that are taking place at the IFC Extreme Challenge event at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on July 10. The co-main event on the card is a IFC World Middleweight bout between UFC veterans Jeremy Horn and Sean Salmon. Some of the regional fighters on the card include Jason Holmes, Anthony Lapsley, Brendan Sequin, Amando Pardo, Chad Herrick and Josh Fish . A women's fight will also be featured between Michigan’s own Amanda LaVoy and California's Karina Hallinan. |
